Birth and Death Registration in Pakistan: Why Delay Causes Problems

Registration underpins CNICs, inheritance, school admission and passports. How it works, and how to register late when the deadline has passed.

Birth and death registration is the foundation on which most other documentation rests. Families usually discover an unregistered birth or death at the moment it blocks something urgent — a passport, a school admission, or an inheritance claim.

Birth registration

Births are registered with the local government body, which issues the birth certificate, and the record feeds into the NADRA system. Registration is required before a child can obtain a B-Form, which in turn is needed for school admission, passports and travel.

Late registration

Where the ordinary period has passed, late registration is generally possible but requires more supporting material — hospital records, school records, affidavits, and sometimes a court order where the position is disputed or the supporting documents conflict.

The longer the delay, the more evidence is needed.

Death registration

A death certificate is required for succession, pension claims, insurance, bank accounts and transfer of property. Families frequently postpone it during mourning and then face difficulty when the estate must be dealt with.

Register the death promptly. It removes a substantial obstacle from everything that follows.

Consistency across records

Names and dates must match across the birth certificate, CNIC, school records and passport. Inconsistency is the source of most subsequent record disputes, and correcting one document while leaving others inconsistent simply postpones the problem.

What to do next

If a birth or death in your family is unregistered, deal with it now rather than when a deadline forces it. Late registration is straightforward compared with litigating a disputed record.
