Canada Study and Work Visas: A Guide for Pakistani Applicants

Canada’s study permit and work permit routes, including Express Entry, explained in outline for applicants coming from Pakistan.

Canada offers separate but connected routes for study and work, and understanding how they relate to each other is the first thing most applicants get wrong.

Study route

A study permit is required for programs longer than six months at a Designated Learning Institution. The application generally requires proof of acceptance from the institution, evidence of funds sufficient to cover tuition and living costs, and satisfaction of health and character requirements.

Graduates of eligible programs may become eligible for a post-graduation work permit, which is often the bridge between studying in Canada and working there afterward.

Work route

Temporary work generally requires a job offer and, in most cases, a Labour Market Impact Assessment obtained by the employer, though categories exempt from this exist.

Permanent skilled migration runs primarily through Express Entry, which manages several federal economic programs on a points basis, alongside Provincial Nominee Programs run by individual provinces.

What Pakistani applicants should prepare early

  • Educational documents verified and, where required, assessed for Canadian equivalency
  • Police clearance certificates
  • Proof of funds with a clear, explainable paper trail
  • Language test results where the route requires them

How WaleedMJ Law helps

WaleedMJ Law is based in Lahore and advises on the Pakistan-side legal and documentary requirements of an application — attestation, police clearance, educational document verification, powers of attorney and coordinating with the destination country’s process. We are not licensed to practise immigration law in this jurisdiction and do not represent clients before its immigration authority; where destination-country legal advice is needed, we say so and point you toward it rather than proceeding regardless. Final decisions rest entirely with that country’s immigration authority, and we do not promise, guarantee or predict any outcome.

More about the practice

This is general legal information, not advice. It describes how a process generally works and does not address the facts of any particular matter. Reading it does not create a lawyer–client relationship, and outcomes depend on the specific facts of each case.
