US immigration law is complex and heavily category-dependent. What follows is the general shape of the two routes most Pakistani applicants ask about.
Study route
The F-1 visa is the standard route for full-time academic study, requiring an I-20 from a SEVP-certified institution and evidence of sufficient funds. Visa interviews at the US Embassy or Consulate are a standard part of the process.
Limited on-campus work is generally permitted during study, and Optional Practical Training may allow work in the field of study after graduation for a defined period.
Work route
The H-1B, for specialty occupations, is subject to an annual numerical cap and a lottery when demand exceeds it. Other categories exist for intracompany transfers, extraordinary ability, and treaty-based routes.
Employment-based permanent residence generally requires an employer sponsor and, for most categories, a labor certification process before a petition can be filed.
What Pakistani applicants should prepare early
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates, properly attested
- Evidence of ties and intent consistent with the visa category applied for
- Financial documentation that can withstand scrutiny at interview
- Employer documentation, where the route is employer-sponsored
How WaleedMJ Law helps
WaleedMJ Law is based in Lahore and advises on the Pakistan-side legal and documentary requirements of an application — attestation, police clearance, educational document verification, powers of attorney and coordinating with the destination country’s process. We are not licensed to practise immigration law in this jurisdiction and do not represent clients before its immigration authority; where destination-country legal advice is needed, we say so and point you toward it rather than proceeding regardless. Final decisions rest entirely with that country’s immigration authority, and we do not promise, guarantee or predict any outcome.
